Features I Tested
Below are the core features I’ve tested and reviewed in this Salomon hiking boot.
1. Design and Build
This boot features 100% synthetic manufacturing, which felt very comforting for my feet, especially for hours of hiking sessions. What I found noticeable about its design is the easy and quick lacing closure system that lets me keep the fitting adjustable without spending too much time, which makes it probably one of the top rated Salomon hiking boots.
I appreciate this design! For color, this Salomon ultra GTX with Castor Gray/Black/Green Sulphur color gives the camouflage look, which certainly goes well with outdoor hiking environments plus, it looks subtle so as not to show dirt marks too visibly.
Unlike regular boots, I liked its protective mudguard around the base of the boot that instantly protected the footwear from muddy trails. It also has an anti-debris mesh upper design that saves the unwanted and tiny debris from getting trapped between its footbed and my feet.
2. Waterproofing and Ventilation
For hiking and outdoor sports, the boot must be kept dry. Therefore, with its Gore-Tex membrane, this boot has provided me with the best airflow and water resistance I have anticipated.
Moreover, the mesh liner with seamless airflow keeps off the build-up of possible foot bacteria and fungus, which is another way to keep hygiene around. Its performance in deeper and wet mud was satisfactory if you think of the best waterproof hiking boot.
Its waterproofing membrane has provided my feet enough protection from moth outside moist and inside sweat build-up, so the result became the best of the best. In short, I found this boot highly suitable for most hiking trips that feature puddle water, mossy wet rocks, watery streams, and other parameters that can make the feet wet.
In short, it a great gore tex boot.
3. Ankle Support and Stability
Ankle support in any boot is what helps in stability while walking. However, the best ankle support marks its central feature in a hiker’s boot. Another thing that I noticed best about its ankle support was the padding. The thick and plush cushioning didn’t cause chafing, so I never needed to remove this boot during my trip.
This Salomon Ultra X hiking boot has a mid-top design, and its supportive ankle support has been my absolute companion while hiking, ascending, descending, and more. The grip remained around no matter how fast or energetically I moved my feet. Therefore, I never slipped or tripped while wearing this boot!
4. Outsole, Traction, and Grip
Talking about hiking boots and overlooking traction doesn’t make any sense! This hiking boot is robust for its unshakable traction on multiple grounds. Its intelligent and resilient rubber outsole provided me with the best grip, and the bouncy feel kept off impact.
I never experienced any below-par performance for traction while trail running, hiking, backpacking, and mountaineering. I hiked, especially in Scotland, and the alpine areas with lots of challenging and slippery grounds have never been a big deal for this boot.
Moreover, Its overall design has been manufactured keeping durability in mind, so I hike on abrasive, uneven, and rough terrain without any concern of wear and tear. In a nutshell, its outsole is excellent for hiking day-long.
5. Uppers, Cushioning, and Comfort
Also, its well-padded thick cushioning and softer material choice gave this Salomon X ultra GTX boot a valid reason to lean on. As mentioned above, its upper is made up of a resilient synthetic mix, which has also provided my feet with the best and snug fitting.
With that, the cushioning and plenty of interior comfort liners significantly attenuated strain and pressure for continuous enough boot wearing. Overall, the boot’s comfort is reliable, and you can even consider it if you have sensitive feet, thanks to plush and squish padding under the feet.
6. Weight and Balance
If you also don’t like heavy-duty and bulky hiking boots like me, this Salomon men’s X ultra-boot is just for you. It’s not only compact in its build, but its total weight is only 1.23 Pounds which is quite suitable for challenging hiking and trails.
Due to its lightweight design, I quickly hiked without putting annoying strain on my feet’s vulnerable joints, and it was no less than a bonus for me. This weight has been wise for me due to the even distribution of uppers and outsole balance. Therefore, I felt comfort and grip while wearing this boot for hiking and other outdoor activities.
7. Durability and Longevity
For durability, I would give this Salomon x Ultra a 5-star rating. This is because I wore this boot on multiple challenging terrains, and, honestly, I didn’t take care of its cleanings. However, the outsole grip, best support and stability, and the performance for traction never underperform a bit
Moreover, Its overall design has been manufactured with durability in mind, so I hiked on abrasive, uneven, and rough terrain without concern for wear and tear. I wore it for 70+ miles with supreme comfort and grip.
Also, its well-designed color and anti-debris design ensured clean and sane performance for an energetic hiking trip. Overall, I never had any wear and tear situation with this hiking boot,z, and that mark is one of the excellent hiking footwear that values the price.
8. Price and Affordability
You might get surprised, but for me, the price range of this boot has been an amazing factor. Considering the quality and value of this Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid Gore-Tex hiking boot, the price has been affordable. This boot cost me $73.63, which I found reasonable for the value it gave.
With that, its durability justified the price. Overall, I didn’t have any bad experiences with this hiking boot. However, I think that it can be improved in its design and appearance a bit!
9. Fitting and Size
The size and fitting of any boot do not go well for everybody. So, keeping my limber feet shape in mind, this boot fitted amazingly. The size of this boot certainly ran right for my feet and there is no doubt about that. However, the thing to mention is its snug-fit interior which is best for narrow feet. Its toe box is not wider, but for me, it was good.
However, for comfort, this Salomon ultra x 3 is one of the most amazing boots for its comfortable box design! What complements its size is the soft interior cushioning that is adaptive to my feet’ shape. So, I instantly felt comfy when I slid my feet into the boot. For narrow feet, I would suggest opting for 1 size bigger so that the Salomon perfection in fitting remains around!
